I have a item I’ve modeled and I’d like to have it milled out of acrylic or polycarbonate. However, I don’t have a CNC router. Moreover, I can’t seem to find a shop to make the item for me. None of them seem to want to do one off jobs.

It’s 300mm x 240mm overall and the frame is 12.5mm x 15mm.

So, if anyone has a CNC router, I’d be more than happy to pay for your time, shop materials etc..

Thanks in advance.

How thick? I can laser cut acrylic up to 1/4"

do you live in or near a city? look for a hackerspace or makerspace.

There’s a chance that the shops you talked to gave an automatic no because of the polycarb/acrylic. I’ve worked in a small fully equipped CNC shop at uni for the last 6 years, we actually just had something similar to this (a frame cut from 1/2" ply) and it turned out to be really hard to do with the long, thin legs.

I’d also recommend, if possible, to radius the inside corners. If a shop is going to mill it, the inside corners will be left with a radius (usually .065" or .125") which can be removed later with a file or similar.

You should be able to have this done with a 3D printer. They can do polycarbonate and those sizes just fine these days. Also should be pretty easy to do as a one-off. You should be able to find someone locally who can do it, or you can do it all online and have them mail you the finished product. Could be more effective than machining.

I am somewhat surprised that you couldn’t find a shop to take this on. I know a few that will do one-off jobs - but typically the CNC setup costs for one part will make it prohibitively expensive unless you spending corporate money on a prototype. I’ve had similar things made out of PC by the shop where I work, but unfortunately they only work on internal projects.

I think a shop wouldn’t want to take that due to hassle of machining acrylic that thin. Also To get one piece a number would have to be broken and shops usually only get paid for good parts.

Also acrylic smells like a skunk when it starts to melt.

Auto desk has services... Their 123d site should get you to a link, sorry I’m not 100% awake... Or maybe it’s just shaoeways. Worth checking out either way.
